Plymouth, Canton legislators join call for Agema ouster

Add Plymouth and Canton state legislators to the growing list of people calling for the resignation of Republican National Committee member Dave Agema.
State Rep. Kurt Heise, a Plymouth Township Republican representing the 20th District, and state Rep. Dian Slavens, a Canton Township Democrat in her third term representing the 21st District, both say the former state representative from Grandville should resign over controversial comments and postings made on Facebook.
They joined a burgeoning list of people calling for Agema to step down – or for the party to oust him – as the RNC prepared to meet this week in Washington.
State Sen. Patrick Colbeck, a Republican from Canton, couldn’t be reached for comment.
Heise said he voted for Agema’s opponent, Saul Azunis, in the 2012 vote that made Agema the committeeman. He said Agema’s postings – comments that have been described as anti-gay, anti-Muslim and intolerant – make it clear he “doesn’t represent me and they don’t represent the party.”
“I think he needs to step down ... it’s time,” Heise said of Agema. “I worked with (Agema) as a state representative but, unfortunately, I have to ask him to do the right thing and step down.”
